The first 4 of 6 stages

  1. 1Define the market scopeChoose the customer region, selling currency and storefront language. Use Japanese throughout the catalog, checkout, order emails and customer support for a domestic audience. Add another language only when delivery and support are ready for that market. Interface language is independent of business country.
  2. 2Prepare the legal identityAlign the entity, owners and bank details. Begin with Owner or representative identification and matching address information.
  3. 3Validate payments and payoutsShopify Payments supports eligible businesses in Japan after verification. Check products, legal business type, owner details and the payout account before relying on approval. Its Japanese payment processing is for online sales, not in-person POS payments. Test a preferred local method as a customer.
  4. 4Configure tax recordsConfirm business registration or notifications, consumption-tax status, invoice-system requirements and record keeping with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser. Product category, business structure and domestic versus export transactions affect the analysis. Shopify tax settings do not complete tax registrations or returns. Record what Shopify handles and what remains outside the platform.

A six-stage Shopify launch roadmap

Each stage ends with evidence: an approved account, configured rule, quoted parcel or completed order. That exposes gaps before paid traffic begins.

Define the market scope

Choose the customer region, selling currency and storefront language. Use Japanese throughout the catalog, checkout, order emails and customer support for a domestic audience. Add another language only when delivery and support are ready for that market. Interface language is independent of business country.

Prepare the legal identity

Align the entity, owners and bank details. Begin with Owner or representative identification and matching address information.

Validate payments and payouts

Shopify Payments supports eligible businesses in Japan after verification. Check products, legal business type, owner details and the payout account before relying on approval. Its Japanese payment processing is for online sales, not in-person POS payments. Test a preferred local method as a customer.

Configure tax records

Confirm business registration or notifications, consumption-tax status, invoice-system requirements and record keeping with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser. Product category, business structure and domestic versus export transactions affect the analysis. Shopify tax settings do not complete tax registrations or returns. Record what Shopify handles and what remains outside the platform.

Design delivery and returns

Compare packed weight and dimensions with Japan Post, Yamato, Sagawa or other carriers. Quote Hokkaido, Okinawa, islands, temperature-controlled goods and oversized parcels separately where needed. Test address capture, delivery preferences and returns. For exports, include restrictions, tracking, customs responsibility and the return address. Named carriers are options to evaluate, not guaranteed built-in integrations. Separate change-of-mind returns from defective goods, wrong items and refused deliveries. Explain contact deadlines, return address, who pays shipping and how refunds work. Do not copy an EU-wide 14-day statement onto all Japanese orders. Check the product page, policies and final confirmation screen for consistent information; subscriptions also need clear recurring charges and cancellation conditions.

Run a controlled launch

Measure contribution after fees and shipping, and plan payout timing. Keep evidence for every result.

Configure Shopify for Japan

  • Set JPY (¥) as the intended selling or market currency and verify settlement separately.
  • Build the storefront language experience around this requirement: Use Japanese throughout the catalog, checkout, order emails and customer support for a domestic audience. Add another language only when delivery and support are ready for that market. Interface language is independent of business country.
  • Enable only payment methods the entity can use: Supported cards and accelerated checkout; verify currency and customer restrictions for JCB, Evaluate third-party options for convenience-store payments or local wallets; check charges, activation and refunds, Bank transfer or cash on delivery requires a reconciliation and failed-delivery process, Arrange in-person card payments separately from Shopify POS inventory management.
  • Configure tax collection only after seller, product, customer location and registration are understood.
  • Build shipping zones from packed-product tests and publish realistic delivery promises.
  • Publish contact, shipping, cancellation, return and privacy information before a live order.

Market, product and order checks

  • Tax configuration: Confirm business registration or notifications, consumption-tax status, invoice-system requirements and record keeping with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser. Product category, business structure and domestic versus export transactions affect the analysis. Shopify tax settings do not complete tax registrations or returns.
  • Shipping promise: Compare packed weight and dimensions with Japan Post, Yamato, Sagawa or other carriers.
  • Returns workflow: Separate change-of-mind returns from defective goods, wrong items and refused deliveries. Explain contact deadlines, return address, who pays shipping and how refunds work. Do not copy an EU-wide 14-day statement onto all Japanese orders. Check the product page, policies and final confirmation screen for consistent information; subscriptions also need clear recurring charges and cancellation conditions.
  • Customer-facing policies match the actual operation and market language.
  • One real-like order is authorized, fulfilled, refunded and reconciled before promotion.

Budget before inventory and advertising

Model the compact Shopify launch separately from inventory, payroll and ongoing advertising.

Illustrative planning scenarios, not market averages: allocate JPY 50,000–150,000 to a self-built validation store or JPY 150,000–400,000 when commissioning defined setup work. Quote software, content and delivery tests separately. Inventory, advertising, registration, accounting, taxes and staff are additional. Check billing currency, tax inclusion and annual versus monthly terms; retain working capital for refunds and purchasing.
