Treat payment setup as eligibility, checkout and settlement
Payment design starts with merchant eligibility and customer preference. Confirm supported business types, products, bank accounts and settlement currencies before promising a payment method.
A payment method is useful only when the merchant can activate it, the target customer can use it and the team can reconcile or reverse the transaction.
- Merchant eligibility: Country, entity, owners, bank details, products and business model shape which services can be activated.
- Customer fit: Cards, wallets and local methods should reflect the first market and device journey rather than a long generic list.
- Money operations: Authorization, payout, refund, dispute and reconciliation are parts of one process.
Eligibility, checkout and bank payouts are different checks
Shopify Payments eligibility follows the actual business location and business and bank requirements, not the website language. Customer methods can depend on buyer country, currency and device. Compare compatible third-party providers if the service is unavailable. Distinguish authorization, capture, payout and refund. A test order does not prove live approval or payout timing. Hold cash to fulfill orders while funds are pending, and reconcile gross orders, deductions and net deposits without recording a payout as another sale.
- Card processing by plan and market
- Currency conversion and cross-border costs
- Alternative payment method charges
- Chargeback and operational handling
Trace one payment through its full lifecycle
Confirm live conditions in the account and document what the shopper, merchant and bank each see.
- Confirm the merchant: Check supported country, business category, owners, bank route and required evidence. A verified or explicitly unresolved eligibility status.
- Design the checkout: Select currencies and the smallest method set that serves the first market. A mobile checkout test using a realistic destination.
- Exercise exceptions: Review failed authorization, cancellation, partial or full refund and dispute ownership. A written response path for each exception.
- Reconcile settlement: Match the order, fees, payout and bank entry using the available reports. A repeatable reconciliation note another operator can follow.
Costs, risks and decision checkpoints
Can this exact business use the intended provider and bank route? Current account eligibility and complete records.
Does checkout support the trusted methods and currency for the first customer group? Device and market-specific checkout observations.
Who owns holds, refunds, disputes and payout differences? Named owners, response targets and an evidence folder.
- Registering under the wrong country
- Mismatched owner and bank information
- Offering methods customers cannot use
- Treating payout timing as instant cash
Validate payments before sending customers to checkout
A payment setup is ready when a real order can be authorized, fulfilled, refunded and reconciled to the bank with clear ownership for exceptions.
Use the actual merchant, currency and first market in the Shopify prototype, then document a fallback only if the primary route cannot meet the requirement.
- Merchant country and category confirmed
- Owner, entity and bank data matched
- First-market methods prioritized
- Authorization and failed payment reviewed
- Refund workflow tested
- Payout and order records reconciled
