Before the first import

Build a complete map of the current store

The most expensive migration mistakes happen when a team copies what is visible in the storefront but misses data, automation, or operational rules behind it.
  • Create a tested backup of WordPress, WooCommerce, media, and the database
  • Record versions, active plugins, integrations, scheduled jobs, and custom code
  • Export every indexable URL and identify organic landing pages and backlinks
  • Remove test orders, duplicate products, obsolete records, and unsupported data
  • Assign an owner and acceptance rule to every disputed field and workflow

What can move automatically—and what needs manual decisions

An automated import still needs mapping, validation, reconciliation, and exception handling.
DataAutomaticManual reviewNotes
ProductsYesYesCore fields, descriptions, prices, SKU, and stock can be imported; validate product types, categories, metafields, and published status.
CustomersYesYesContact data and approved attributes can move, but passwords normally require account activation in Shopify.

ImagesYesYesCheck image quality, ownership, alt text, ordering, and association with the correct products and variants.
VariantsYesYesComplex WooCommerce attributes, bundles, or add-ons may need a new Shopify data model.
Blog and pagesNoYesArticles, authors, categories, page layouts, internal links, and publication dates often need a separate content pass.
SEO metadataNoYesTitles, descriptions, canonical rules, schema, and indexability decisions must be transferred and reviewed.
Coupons and discountsNoYesRebuild discount logic in Shopify and test eligibility, combinations, expiry, and reporting.
Plugin functionalityNoYesMap each business job to a native Shopify feature, a suitable app, a custom integration, or a simpler process.

Timeline

An eight-stage migration plan

Do not move the domain immediately after importing data. Every stage needs an acceptance criterion and an owner.
  1. 01

    Audit

Inventory data, plugins, integrations, URLs, business rules, and legal constraints.

  2. 02

    Target architecture

Design collections, product types, metafields, variants, markets, and operating rules in Shopify.

  3. 03

    Test import

Move a representative sample and validate field mapping, relationships, media, and storefront output.

  4. 04

    Full migration

Run the approved import, record errors, and reconcile entity counts and financial samples.

  5. 05

    Content and SEO

Move pages and blog content, preserve valuable signals, and complete the redirect map.

  6. 06

    Integrations

Configure payments, tax, shipping, analytics, CRM, support, and operational applications.

  7. 07

    Quality assurance

Test mobile checkout, refunds, notifications, search, accounts, inventory, consent, and analytics.

  8. 08

    Launch

Freeze changes, run the delta import, switch the domain, monitor, and keep a documented rollback path.

SEO migration

Preserve signals that already create value

Migration is not a reason to redesign every URL and page at once. Preserve proven value first; improve structure later with measured changes.

Content

Preserve useful copy, headings, image alt text, and metadata.

Indexing

Validate robots, sitemap, canonical, noindex, and structured data.

Structure

Map WooCommerce categories to intentional Shopify collections.

Monitoring

Track 404 errors, index coverage, rankings, conversion, and revenue after launch.

Use exact redirect mapping

Old product to new product; old category to the closest new collection. Avoid redirect chains and never send every retired page to the homepage.

301 permanent
Launch gates

Three controls before the final cutover

Domain, payments, and testing need separate owners and recorded evidence.

Domain

Prepare DNS access, SSL, primary-domain settings, canonical behavior, cutover timing, and rollback records.

Payments

Complete successful and failed payment tests, a refund, payout reconciliation, tax, and fraud-review checks.

Testing

Run mobile checkout, account activation, search, notifications, shipping, discounts, inventory, consent, and analytics.

Final launch checklist

Tick only the checks you have completed. Progress stays until you reload this page.

FAQ

WooCommerce migration questions

How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?
A small standard store can often be prepared in one or two weeks. Large catalogs, order history, complex variants, custom plugins, integrations, and multilingual content can extend the work to several weeks or months.
Can customer passwords be migrated?
Usually not. Passwords are stored as protected hashes that are not portable between the systems. Plan a branded account-activation or password-reset flow for customers.
Can the store keep its search rankings?
No migration can guarantee rankings. Risk is reduced by preserving useful content and metadata, mapping each valuable URL to the best new destination, using direct 301 redirects, and monitoring after launch.
Does WooCommerce need to go offline during migration?
Not for most of the build. A controlled final window is normally used to freeze changes or synchronize the latest orders, customers, and inventory before the domain moves.
Can every WooCommerce plugin be replaced by a Shopify app?
Not one for one. Define the underlying business job first, then choose a native Shopify capability, an app, a custom integration, or a redesigned process. Avoid recreating obsolete complexity.
Ready to prepare the target

Build and test the Shopify structure before moving all data

Approve the model with a representative test import, then move the full scope and switch the domain only after the launch gates pass.
